First grade is a truly amazing year. Each child will show tremendous growth not only in the basics of reading/language arts and math, but also in the areas of independence and responsibility.
Our reading/language program is very strong in the areas of phonemic awareness, vocabulary and fluency. These skills transfer to spelling and writing. Watch for the excitement in your child’s eyes as he or she begins to read and finally takes off and flies.
In math, the basic concepts of counting, addition, subtraction, money to quarters, time to the half hour, graphing, and measurement are introduced and covered. Learning the addition facts from 0 to 10, will prepare your child for the more advanced math of second grade.
In social studies, the children are introduced to their world and communities. In science, they are exposed to the topics of forces and plants. An end of the year combined project is an animal report and a trip to zoo.
All children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade are assessed three times a year (September, January, and May) in both reading and math using the AIMS Web screening program. They are given several one minute tests which help us to determine if your child is making adequate progress and if extra help is needed to bring your child up to level.
