Kindergarten

Course Purpose:

Students will analyze their social world by examining the how and why of various aspects of their daily lives.

SS.K.1 Students will investigate the need for and purpose of rules and analyze the roles and responsibilities of various authority figures in their social world.
SS.K.2 Students will distinguish the goods around them as wants or needs and determine the effects of environmental characteristics on people’s lives.
SS.K.3 Students will construct comparisons of life in the past with their lives today and confirm the significance of national holidays and the people associated with them.

1st Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will apply inquiry skills in order to evaluate how people live, learn, and work together.

SS.11 Students will analyze how a community works together and utilize maps to navigate familiar places in the community.
SS.1.2 Students will ask and answer guiding questions to describe individuals and groups who have shaped significant historical change and compare perspectives of people in the past to the present.
SS.1.3 Students will analyze financial and economic decisions and evaluate the skills and knowledge needed to produce goods and services in exchange for work.

2nd Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will examine parts of their society collaboratively in order to determine their role in  their families, neighborhood, and community.

SS.2.1 Students will analyze communities in order to compare and contrast their own community with others.
SS.2.2 Students will examine how the government and others play roles within our community.
SS.2.3 Students will evaluate and use historical sources in order to determine how people have made significant change in communities over time.
SS.2.4 Students will assess the role of money in our community and compare local goods and services to other communities.

3rd Grade

Course Purpose:

 Students will construct questions and develop answers in order to explore communities near and far.

SS.3.2 Students will demonstrate how significant people, events, and developments have had a significant historical impact on their communities and regions and apply to current local contexts.
SS.3.3 Students will investigate how African Americans and events in Black History have influenced historical change throughout the world.
SS.3.4 Students will analyze how people and institutions play a role in how the community works together.

4th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will evaluate the origins of Illinois in order to determine its role in our nation.

SS.4.2 Students will assess the growth of Illinois over time and analyze the role Illinois has played in the growth of the United States.
SS.4.3 Students will justify the relationship of civic duty to the development and function of a democracy at the state and federal level.
SS.4.4 Students will analyze their economic and financial roles as citizens in Illinois and the United States.

5th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will analyze the historical relationship between the United States and other nations world wide.

SS.5.2 Students will analyze the probable causes and effects of the Civil War by differentiating the environmental, cultural, and technological characteristics of the Northern and Southern United States.
SS.5.3 Students will analyze the United States’ role in World War II and concurrent global events of the time period through use of a variety of sources.
SS.5.4 Students will analyze the causes and effects of the atrocities of the Holocaust.
SS.5.5 Students will relate the characteristics of our nation’s economy to the world.

6th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will analyze world cultures in order to assess their impact over time.

SS.6.1 Students will examine a variety of historical sources to evaluate the social, political, and geographic impact of early people and settlement patterns.
SS.6.2 Students will develop and answer essential questions using various resources to assess the relationships between Egypt and Nubia.
SS.6.3 Students will analyze how developments in India and China were shaped through differing perspectives and summarize changes over time.
SS.6.4 Students will examine roles of citizens in Greek history by developing claims and constructing arguments in order to evaluate citizen connectedness.
SS.6.5 Students will evaluate causes and effects of significant changes over time in Ancient Rome.

7th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will evaluate rules and laws at municipal, state, and federal levels in order to examine their societal impact.

SS.7.2 Students will analyze the origins, purposes, and principles of the United States Constitution as our plan of government and patriotism.
SS.7.3 Students will analyze economic reasons for exploration and expansion westward by evaluating components of financial literacy.
SS.7.4 Students will analyze the origins, purposes, and principles of the Illinois Constitution and show cultural and environmental characteristics of Illinois.
SS.7.5 Students will investigate arguments and explanations in order to create action plans within our school and community.

8th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will critique significant global historical events in United States history in order to develop claims on societal issues.

SS.8.1 Students will examine struggles of Americans during and after Reconstruction and through the 20th Century.
SS.8.2 Students will analyze the contributions made by individuals and groups of women to gain the right to vote and the struggles they and other groups faced to be treated equally.
SS.8.3 Students will analyze how far-reaching financial decisions contributed to the economic events of the 1920’s.
SS.8.4

Students will verify the relationship between economic decisions and their implications on society during the Great Depression.

SS.8.5 Students will investigate the relationship of the United States to other countries in order to explain how conflicts arise.
SS.8.6 Students will investigate the atrocities of genocide through use of various sources.
SS.8.7 Students will determine the effects and influences of immigration on the economy.
