Course Purpose and Outcomes

Kindergarten

Course Purpose:

Students will explore the fundamental elements of music physically and aurally on a variety of instruments, and begin to analyze how music is connected to their home, community, and lived experiences.

FA.KM.1 Students will keep the steady beat and the rhythm of a known song on a variety of instruments and verbally and visually be able to differentiate between the two.

FA.KM.2

Students will perform and improvise using quarter notes, quarter rests, and two eighth notes on a variety of instruments, using visual aids and manipulatives.

FA.KM.3

Students differentiate between and perform different stylistic contrasts in music (e.g. high/low, fast/slow, short/long, loud/soft, 4 types of voices).

FA.KM.4

Students will prepare and perform, vocally and instrumentally, a variety of age and range-appropriate musical selections, with considerable guidance. 

FA.KM.5 Students will make connections between literature and music and between personal emotions and music, and will select personal music to fit with a work of literature.
FA.KM.6 Students will sing accurately on sol and mi and explore and demonstrate various elements of music and movement (e.g. musical patterns, same/different, moving in a self-space, moving in a circle), , through the performance and analysis of classroom songs.
FA.KM.7 Students will  improvise and perform (with iconic notation) level borduns and melodic patterns (same/different, high/low), in AB and ABA form, on both pitched and unpitched instruments.

1st Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will engage in the basics of musical notation and composition on a variety of instruments, and investigate how personal choices help create musical ideas.

FA.1M.1 Students will perform and identify the beat, the rhythm, and the meter of a known song on a variety of instruments, incorporating known rhythms and half notes/rests, and verbally and visually be able to differentiate between the two.

Students will improvise, compose, and perform, using both standard and non-standard notation, musical and rhythmic phrases of various lengths, including known rhythms, half note/rest, and solfege syllables (sol, mi, and la).

Students will prepare and perform, vocally and instrumentally,  a variety of age and range-appropriate music from various cultures and traditions, with guidance, for an audience of peers, friends, and families.

FA.1M.5

Students will analyze a standard orchestral work to discuss ways music can tell a story, perform extended dynamics and perform and conduct in duple meter (simple and compound)

FA.1M.6

Students will describe, create, and perform a song based on sol, mi, and la consisting of steps, leaps, and skips, either individually or as a call and response song with the teacher, through analyzing and performing various classroom songs.

Students will improvise and perform various musical phrases and forms, to include simple broken borduns and melodies using sol, mi, and la, on both pitched and unpitched instruments.

2nd Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will engage in aspects of standard musical notation and composition and make connections between music, culture, and dance.

Students will perform notes on the treble clef, identifying the placement and function of measures and bar lines, and performing a major and minor diatonic scale with correct Curwen hand signs.

Students will prepare and perform vocally and instrumentally with limited guidance, a variety of age and range-appropriate music from various cultures and traditions.

FA.2M.5

Students will analyze a standard orchestral work to discuss ways dance and music connect and identify and conduct various dynamics and tempi from the work.

FA.2M.6

Students will create, and perform various songs on do, re, mi, sol, and la, with various stylistic elements (e.g. repeat sign, coda, question/answer song form).

FA.2M.7

Students will identify and compare, aurally and visually, the form and function of various orchestral instruments.

FA.2M.8

Students will perform circle and partner folk dances and contrast various dance forms and music from different cultures and traditions.

3rd Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will engage in the practice and preparation of music, with guidance, on the recorder and master more complicated folk and cultural dances.

Students will play a basic pentatonic scale (D, E, G, A, B), improvised, and written music on a soprano recorder with proper technique.

Students will read and perform ledger line notes on the treble clef, sixteenth notes and syncopated rhythms, both on syllables and numerically.

Students will use analysis and performance of classroom songs to describe, create, and perform a do-based and la-based pentatonic scale and various do-based and la-based pentatonic songs, alone and as a canon/round/partner song.

Students will improvise and compose (with standard notation), pentatonic melodies in both rondo form and ABA form,  on both pitched and unpitched instruments.

Students will contrast different dance forms and music from different cultures and traditions, through performing folk dances.

4th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will perform on the recorder independently and will compose short works of music on a digital platform.

FA.4M.1 Students will prepare and perform a variety of age and range-appropriate musical selections representing different cultures and traditions, both vocally and instrumentally.
FA.4M.1 Students will, through the study and analysis of a standard orchestral work, connect literature and poetry to music.
FA.4M.1 Students will through analysis and performance of various classroom songs, sing and improvise independently on the notes of a diatonic scale, using rhythms to include eighth/sixteenth combinations.
FA.4M.1 Students will, on both pitched and unpitched instruments, improvise and compose (with standard notation), including various ostinati and borduns using two and three mallets.

5th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will analyze the musical traditions of the world and will explore the connections between music, art, and composition.

FA.5M.5 Students will explore how music and the visual arts interconnect and inspire each other and demonstrate conducting patterns in various meters, through the study and analysis of a standard orchestral work.
FA.5M.6 Students will identify and discuss the function of stylistic and theoretical elements of music, through analysis and performance of various classroom songs.
FA.5M.7 Students will improvise and compose, using standard notation, including various ostinati and borduns using a variety of classroom instruments.

6th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will compose using DAW (digital audio workstation) and investigate how their personal experiences are shaped and defined by music.

FA.6M.3 Students will, through a survey of music history, identify and compose music in various historical forms and compare and contrast, verbally and aurally, the various stylistic elements of each period.
FA.6M.4 Students will perform a selection of appropriate vocal and instrumental music, in large and small groups, from a variety of cultures and traditions, for an audience of peers, family, and teachers.
FA.6M.5 Students will create a musical self-portrait, using technological tools to collect and synthesize a collection of musical works that represent their lived experiences.
FA.6M.6 Students will identify and discuss the function of stylistic and theoretical elements of music, through analysis and performance of various classroom songs.
FA.6M.7 Students will, on both pitched and unpitched instruments, choose, improvise and compose basic instrumental works.
FA.6M.8 Using a digital audio workstation (DAW), students will create a musical work that follows a self-created narrative.

7th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will investigate the history of music in American protest movements and examine the intersection of music and drama in musical theater.

FA.7M.1 Students will discuss and explore musical theater, differentiating between the structure and makeup of musical theater throughout history and analyzing musical theater's role in influencing and reflecting various historical and social movements.
FA.7M.2 Students will analyze the music of a variety of composers and choose one composer from a teacher-supplied list to research more thoroughly.
FA.7M.3

Students will investigate simple pieces of music on the grand staff, analyzing their stylistic elements, such as tonality, timbre, texture, and structure.

FA.7M.3 Students will perform a selection of appropriate vocal and instrumental music, in large and small groups, from a variety of cultures and traditions, including at least one student-composed piece.
FA.7M.5 Students will identify and analyze their musical and lyrical structure and connect the American history of protest songs with its modern day incarnations, through the study of the history and function of protest songs.
FA.7M.6 Students will improvise and compose basic instrumental works and perform well known songs on pitched instruments, specifically the ukulele.
FA.7M.7 Students will create a musical work that draws inspiration from a work of art or literature, using a digital audio workstation (DAW).

8th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will compose more complex pieces of music and make connections between present day music and fundamental American musical genres.

FA.8M.1 Students will analyze and compare a cover song to its original, describing the stylistic differences and the possible reasons for each change.
FA.8M.2 Students will analyze the music of a variety of composers of non-classical music and choose two composers with similarities (age, nation of origin, preferred musical style) to compare and contrast.
FA.8M.3 Students will investigate the history and structure of jazz music.
FA.8M.4 Students will perform a selection of appropriate vocal and instrumental music, in large and small groups, from a variety of cultures and traditions, including at least one student-composed piece and one student-selected piece.
FA.8M.5 Students will examine Hip-Hop music, identifying and analyzing its historical roots, its role in historical and social movements, and its impact on American society.
FA.8M.6 Students will improvise and compose basic instrumental works using a variety of scales and modes, on both pitched and unpitched instruments.
FA.8M.7 Using a digital audio workstation (DAW), students will create a musical work in standard pop song form.
