Music Curriculum

Course Purpose

Kindergarten

Students will explore the fundamental elements of music physically and aurally on a variety of instruments, and begin to analyze how music is connected to their home, community, and lived experiences.

1st Grade

Students will engage in the basics of musical notation and composition on a variety of instruments, and investigate how personal choices help create musical ideas.

2nd Grade

Students will engage in aspects of standard musical notation and composition and make connections between music, culture, and dance.

3rd Grade

Students will engage in the practice and preparation of music, with guidance, on the recorder and master more complicated folk and cultural dances.

4th Grade

Students will perform on the recorder independently and will compose short works of music on a digital platform.

5th Grade

Students will analyze the musical traditions of the world and will explore the connections between music, art, and composition.

6th Grade

Students will compose using DAW (digital audio workstation) and investigate how their personal experiences are shaped and defined by music.

7th Grade

Students will investigate the history of music in American protest movements and examine the intersection of music and drama in Musical Theater.

8th Grade

Students will compose more complex pieces of music and make connections between present day music and fundamental American musical genres.
