Science Curriculum

5th Grade

Course Purpose:

Fifth grade students will evaluate the effects of patterns on processes or objects.

Outcomes and Components:

SC.5.3 Students will investigate and describe the flow of energy through an ecosystem and verify the cause and effect relationship among interdependent organisms within food chains and food webs.

SC.5.3.1 Use various sources/models to verify the sun as the source of all energy in a food chain. (Including the process of photosynthesis.) 5-PS3-1
SC.5.3.2 Relate plant growth and survival to sun, air, and water. 5-LS1-1
SC.5.3.3 Define producer, consumer, and decomposer and their role within an environment.
SC.5.3.4 Illustrate the cause and effect relationship of interdependent organisms within a food chain. (producers, consumers, decomposers) 5-LS2-1
SC.5.3.5 Characterize the relationships among organisms (producers, consumers, and decomposers) within a food web explain how they relate to the success of an ecosystem. 5-LS2-1
SC.5.3.6 Construct a model to describe the movement of matter (carbon, water, nutrients) among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.
